Anyone who knows me knows that I always have a song in my head, and am usually singing something. Badly. Anyway, I just pulled out one of my favorite albums from college, “Southern Rock Opera” By the Drive By Truckers, and heard a great lyric. The name of the song, perhaps appropriately, is “Dead Drunk and Naked.” The lyric goes something like this:
“If you’re out there listening, I just want you to know/I been doing just fine, psychiatrists tell me so.”
Kind of morose, but I was just in the mood where it struck a chord. So then I started thinking of a partial list of my favorite lines from songs. Here’s what I have come up with so far. Feel free to add to it.
“For what is a man, what has he got?/If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels/And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows/And did it my way”
– Frank Sinatra, “My Way”
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life./ I know you will be a star
In somebody else’s sky/ but why can’t it be mine?”
– Pearl Jam, “Black”
“I guess I was wrong I just don’t belong/ but then I’ve been there before,
everything’s alright/ I’ll just say goodnight and I’ll show myself to the door
Hey I didn’t mean to cause a big scene just give me an hour and then,
I’ll be as high as that Ivory Tower and you’ll never know,”
– Garth Brooks “Friends in Low Places”
“Your brother was the first born/ got 10 fingers and 10 toes
And it’s a damn good thing because he needs all 20 to keep the closet door closed.”
– Drive By Truckers, “Zip City” (I wonder who my favorite group is?)
“Aw Dip, tell me all about your little trip”
– Dr. Powerful, “Not Again”
And finally, the best lyric ever:
“Saw things so much clearer/ Once you were in my rearviewmirror”
- Pearl Jam, “Rearviewmirror”
Let me know your favorites…
